Devoted to Doing Good

Posted by Rudy Bropleh on

This week in Liberia, the son of former Liberian President William V.S. Tubman was murdered. In Nigeria, 34 persons were killed in a village by armed men. In the United States, Gabby Petito’s body was discovered, and a search is on for her fiancé. Tragic news makes headlines, gets attention, sells papers, and generates a lot of public interest.

But for every tragic event, there are countless events that are positive, uplifting, encouraging, and contributing to building a better community. For every painful experience, there are countless profitable and productive experiences. For every person who breaks the law, there are countless others who abide by the law. The world is not the way it is because of what “bad” people do; the world is the way it is because of what “good” people don’t do.

Each person should be a force for good in their lifetime.  At some point in your life you will have the power and opportunity to do some good. In fact, a commitment to being good and doing good is one of the best ways to make a difference in any area of life. The bigger the commitment to doing good, the better the culture of goodness, kindness, and progress. In Titus 3 the bible shares some wisdom about our devotion to doing good.

Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone. This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone. (Titus 3:1-2, 8).

How devoted are you to doing good? Who benefits from your acts of kindness and goodness? Is it just your family, your friends, or your local community? Or do you seek to do some good whenever you can, wherever you can, and to whomever you can? Good people are world changers, and their good deeds do change the world.

Thank God for each day and do some good in that day. Purpose to do some good and take pride in the fact that you are a do-gooder. And if there are some bad things happening in your family, your community, or within your sphere of influence, amplify and accelerate the good you do, so that your goodness will outdo, outshine, outlive, and outlast the ugliness in these places.

Be devoted to doing good; that is one of the smartest things you can do!
