Eternal Entitlements

On April 2, 1988, my mother lost her battle with cancer. She was one of six children (she had five brothers) born to her parents. Her parents had some property, including land. Before my grandparents passed, they put my mother in charge of their family estate. My mother cared for her brothers (three of them predeceased her) and their kids. She was always there for her family, and I thought she was a pretty kind and generous person. 
 
However, barely a month after my mother passed, I got a writ of summon from the Sheriff’s office to appear in court. My Uncles (my mother’s brothers) had sued my brother and I…they wanted control of my grandparents’ property! Their argument was that they were the surviving children; and they were the rightful heirs of their parents. They were right, but the manner in which they asserted their right, was wrong.
 
Galatians 4:7 states: “So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.” Because Jesus Christ is God, all those who believe in Jesus are heirs of God. While I may not have been an immediate heir of my grandparents’ property, I am indeed an heir of God our Father. And the Bible teaches us that our Father is rich in houses and lands. He owns everything and will not withhold anything from his children. That is much better than any amount of property my grandparents had.
 
Have you ever felt “un-entitled”? Are there times when people have made you feel like you have no rights or privileges? What do you do when you really want something but know you are not entitled to it? God has something to say about your entitlements:
 
“26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” (Galatians 3:26-29).
 
You may not have houses or land, cars or cash. But if you are a follower of Jesus Christ, you have everything—now or in eternity. You have been guaranteed eternal entitlements.
 
Wisdom for this Week
If you have one thing, a relationship with Jesus Christ, you will eventually have everything.
