Qualities of Good Leadership

Posted by Rudy Bropleh on

The greatest asset in any society is its people; and the greatest challenge to any society can also be its people. People are the only societal asset that can think, talk, and act. Organization is often needed for a group of people to progress—in the family, school, community, church, or nation. And organized efforts require leadership, whether formal or informal, elected, appointed, or anointed.

It is often said that organizations rise and fall on the backs of leadership. The same is true for nations. Leadership matters. It is important to have standards for leadership and qualities that are expected in leaders. The Bible, as it does with many things, offers insights about good leadership.

5 The reason I left you in Crete was that you might put in order what was left unfinished and appoint (or ordain) elders in every town, as I directed you. 6 An elder must be blameless, faithful to his wife, a man whose children believe (or are trustworthy) and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient. 7 Since an overseer manages God’s household, he must be blameless—not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain. 8 Rather, he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined. 9 He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.” (Titus 1:5-9). The truths from this text suggest qualities of good leadership for the sacred and secular units of society.

A good leader (male or female) should care for his/her family. It is difficult to care for others if you are not caring for yourself. And your family is a part of you.

A good leader should be humble, placid, sober, nonviolent, and honest. These qualities enable good leadership in any area of society, anywhere.

A good leader should be disciplined and self-controlled. These qualities allow a person to stay focused and remain faithful to the things that really matter.

A good leader should have some non-negotiable principles, and a faith foundation. Anywhere you have people, there may be politics and problems. Human behavior is complex, and there is no playbook to go to for solving all problems. Therefore, being principled and standing on a foundation of faith, a leader can show and maintain character in the midst of crisis.

Good leaders make the world a better place. If you are privileged to lead, then lead well.
