What Matters Most

Posted by Rudy Bropleh on

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly (or prudently) with your God. (Micah 6:8)

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:33) Read Matthew 6:25-33 for context.

What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? (Mark 8:36)

The story is told of a man who was out deer-hunting. He saw his target (a big deer), took aim, but got distracted. A fly kept sitting on his face—and the noisy one at that! He would brush the fly off only for it to come right back. The man was annoyed; so when the fly sat on the branch across from him, the hunter took aim at the fly and fired. Yes, fired at the fly! Of course he destroyed the little creature, but he also lost the big deer that he was hoping to take home with him!

Life, no matter where you live it, is full of tests and tasks. There are so many things to do, places to go, decisions to make, and tasks to get done. There is the family to care for, relationships to attend to, politics to grapple with, personal development, healthcare issues, and the list goes on and on. So how are you handling all of the things you have to do at one point or another in your life? Are you focusing on what matters most?

The road to your next destination might be loaded with distractions. Try not to let the smaller things distract you from accomplishing the bigger things. Think about the long-term satisfaction of achieving something big, and not the short-term pleasure of getting rid of an annoyance. At any point in your life, God will show you what matters most. (Micah 6:8).

There is so much going on in our world today—the COVID-19 global pandemic, political theatrics in the United States, a struggling world economy, high unemployment, and the everyday struggles (bread-and-butter issues) of families across the globe. Each day you should answer the question: “What matters most to me today?” Then find out what God thinks of your priority for the day. God understands the importance of family, finances, and faith; and urges us to take care of the faith matter first (Matthew 6:25-33).

Spend your time, energy, and resources on what matters most. At the end of the day, it is the eternal gains that really matter (Mark 8:36).
