When a Man Loves a Woman

Posted by Rudy Bropleh on

When a man loves a woman, can't keep his mind on nothing else;
He'd trade the world for the good thing he's found.
These words are part of the 1991 hit song that landed Michael Bolton a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. In his classic sentimental style, the singer-songwriter uses his music to point out one of the most important elements of healthy relationships: Love. The quality of your relationships will impact the quality of your life.
Family relationships began when a man (Adam) was given his “suitable helper” (Eve), and the two became one (Genesis 2:20-24). Because the family is the basic unit of society, healthy family relationships are extremely important, especially between the husband and wife. When a man loves a woman he “covers” her and commits to her; he protects her and provides for her. He’s not doing her a favor; that’s his responsibility.
The husband should see himself as privileged to be in a position to love one of God’s prized possessions—his wife; and to be the head of a household and raise a family. “He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord.” (Proverbs 18:22).
The wife is the nurturer and caretaker, turning the house into a home. She should honor and respect her husband, appreciating and affirming his role in the family. If the wife is more educated or earns more money than her husband, her obligations to her husband do not change.
So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.” (Ephesians 5:33, NLT). God’s expectations of the husband and wife actually do help to create healthy spousal relationships. Brother, love your wife, nurture her, pamper her, and be patient with her. Sister, respect your husband. Talk to him in an even keel voice. Don’t nag him or talk down to him. He has an ego given by God (that’s right!), so feed it. It will encourage him to be more of the man you desire; and he will do more.
Relationships require work, but this is one of the best works you will do. If the husband and wife enjoy a healthy relationship, there is a great chance that the atmosphere in their home will be healthy. Commitment, compromise, cooperation, communication, collaboration, and love for each other, together, can work wonders!
As always, the Good Book has some insights: “Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs.” (Proverbs 10:12). That’s the key—love each other and forgive one another. Oh yes, forgive and forget.
