You Are Beautiful
In her book—Molly Bawn—written over 140 years ago, Irish novelist Margaret Wolfe Hungerford included this phrase: beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This phrase has become popular in many places around the world. The phrase suggests that your beauty depends on what others see and say. In other words, beauty is subjective.
We spend so much time, energy, and resources fixing up, making up, and trying to look our best for everybody else. We are concerned about what people say about us and because of that, we give others the privilege to determine our beauty and worth. Singer Barry White says these words in one of his songs: “Don't go changing, trying to please me…I'll take you just the way you are… I want you just the way you are…I love you just the way you are.”
Just the way you are. Yes. Just the way you are! Ecclesiastes 3:11 says, “He (God) has made everything beautiful in its time.” God sees you just the way you are—with intrinsic value, sacred worth, and beautiful. Here’s another peek into the mind of God regarding your beauty: “3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. 4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” Bam! Bingo! On target!
When you leave the determination of your value, worth, and beauty entirely up to others, you run the risks of disappointments, shaky confidence, low self-esteem and maybe, depression. While the opinions of others may affect your life in various ways, you must have a good understanding of how you “look” and who you are. Here is a tip: “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27).
Your beauty is innate, intrinsic, and inward. And that inner beauty has an outward reflection in your attitude and your actions. Your kindness is beautiful. Your compassion toward others reflects your beauty. Your generosity is an act of beauty. Your service to community and country makes you and others even more beautiful.
How do you feel about yourself? Have you allowed others to dampen your spirits because of the ‘low marks’ they gave you regarding your beauty? If so, you can change that today. You can repeat, as often as you need to, what King David said: “I praise you (God) because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” (Psalm 139:14).
Regardless of anything you have been through or anything that has happened to you, you are beautiful. And God has spoken about your beauty in his word: “You are altogether beautiful, my darling; there is no flaw in you.” (Song of Songs 4:7). Believe it. You are beautiful!
